City of Santa Clara Recycling Program Recycling is more important than ever before to individuals and communities today. There is a pressing need to preserve our environment, save natural resources, reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills and make recycling easier.

Recology South Bay Electronic - Plastic Toy Truck
Recology Santa Clara provides residents of Santa Clara with a program called Environmental Days, which is designed to help promote recycling, reuse and diversion of usable materials from the landfill. Details of the Environmental Days are as follows:

Materials Accepted:

Recology South Bay - Used Clothing
  • Residential documents for confidential shredding
  • Electronic Waste (computers, monitors, printers, etc.)
  • Universal Waste (batteries, cell phones, CFLs and fluorescent tubes)
  • Clothing
  • Children's plastic toys and play structures

Residents must provide a current collection bill and personal identification (i.e., Driver's License) to verify eligibility for this free drop-off program.

Acceptable Recycling Materials
Only place recyclable materials into your recycling container!
Please empty and rinse all food and beverage containers.
Aseptic containers Aseptic containers are sterile cardboard containers, which are used to preserve food.
  • Cardboard milk cartons.
  • Cardboard orange juice cartons
  • Fruit juice boxes
Glass All glass food, beverage jars and bottles. Remove metal lids and place separately in bin.
  • Fruit juice
  • Mayonnaise jars
  • Spaghetti sauce jars
Metal All metal food and beverage containers including those made of aluminum, tin, steel and bi-metal.
  • Rinsed food and beverage cans
    (aluminum, steel, and tin)
  • Soda, pet food, soup, and tuna cans (lids okay)
Plastic Containers marked #1 - #7
  • Detergent and shampoo containers
  • Milk and orange juice jugs
  • Plastic bags (Recycle grocery, produce, dry cleaning and bread bags by bundling together inside a clear plastic bag.)
  • Water bottles
Paper Most clean and dry household paper:
  • Adhesive notes
  • Brown paper grocery bags
  • Cardboard (Please break down and cut fit inside recycling cart.)
  • Food boxes (cereal, crackers, remove liners)
  • Junk mail & envelopes
  • Home & office paper
  • Magazines & catalogs
  • Newspaper
  • Paper (colored, computer, white)

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
  • Put in clear Ziploc-type plastic bags and place next to recycling cart.
Motor Oil & Filters

Used Motor Oil
Put used motor oil in one-gallon (or less) plastic container with tight-fitting screw-top lid. You may place up to three one-gallon containers next to your recycling cart for pick up on your regular collection day.

Used Oil Filters
Put fully drained used oil filters in sealed, leak-proof plastic bags and place next to your recycling cart.

Unacceptable Recycling Materials
Please do not place the following non-recyclable materials into your blue container!
Construction Debris
  • Concrete, rocks, dirt
Electronic / Universal Waste
  • Televisions, computers, cell phones, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury switches
Household Hazardous Waste
  • Paints, solvents, cooking oil, motor oil, cleaners, corrosives, fuel tanks - propane tanks

Unacceptable Glass, Metal, Paper and Plastic
